Who are these sessions for?

Targeted at Senior staff/team leaders and those new to a management role or those simply wanting to further develop skills in this area of work.

When and How?

Following the short pilot in the Summer, the new sessions will commence in October 2021 and will run once a month over a six-month period (as opposed to the four-month pilot). Sessions to be held for an hour via Zoom cutting out time-consuming travel and enabling staff to be on site at their business premises, should they be needed as a matter of urgency whilst the session is running.

The frequency also provides consistency and a chance to form a well-established but small group without threatening ‘contact time’ within the organisation in which the staff member works.

Numbers attending are kept low.

Dates as follows;

  • Wednesday 13 October 10am – 11am
  • Wednesday 10 November 10am – 11am
  • Wednesday 8 December 10am – 11am
  • Wednesday 6 January 10am – 11am
  • Wednesday 3 February 10am – 11am
  • Wednesday 3 March 10am – 11am

There will be an option to develop an ongoing network beyond March 2022.

The benefits

During 2020 and into 2021 face-to-face training was not possible.

Online training and remote learning became invaluable. However, what these methods often miss is the opportunity to build valuable relationships and a chance to interact with others in similar roles for meaningful discussions on current challenges and to gain more support and guidance.

The Peer Support pilot sessions of the Summer 2021 provided just this, and it was the number one benefit stated by those attending. See testimonial below.

The group number is purposefully kept low.

How the sessions will work and what is on offer

  • A ‘getting to know’ session’ with other professionals from different organisations.
  • Structured but interactive session with no prescriptive content – topics can be raised by those attending and session is facilitated by an experienced professional to meet the common interests of the majority.
  • A focus on finding solutions to problems; sharing ideas and views.
  • Reminders of the key skills required to be an effective leader and manager, as well as top tips.
  • Discussions on key topics and matters of interest as well as those that create challenge.
  • Exercises and tools will be shared to support the individual to develop their skills.
  • Sharing of short, relevant reads to support ongoing development and to help with issues raised during discussions – whatever they may be.
  • Monthly one-hour sessions via Zoom – dates scheduled in advance.
  • No onerous study time required – just useful practical exercises to try and feedback on at future sessions.
  • An enabling approach used by the facilitator to pass learning and development to every individual.

Key topics may include the following depending on the needs of the group

  • Dealing with staff conflict, negotiation, and conciliation skills.
  • Developing ‘soft skills’ – these are personal attributes that enable a person to interact more effectively & harmoniously with others.
  • Creating a positive mindset.
  • Developing good work habits
  • Managing time in a busy work environment.
  • Interventions to support the needs of a range of staff members with different skills.
  • Styles of Leadership & Management, when and how to use.
  • Development of coaching skills using the GROW Model.
  • Coaching and Mentoring – what is the difference and when and how to use?
  • Setting SMART goals for self, and a team.
  • Brainstorming strategies to include mind mapping, reverse thinking, and gap-filling.
  • Applying ‘Situational Leadership’ strategies.
  • Using SWOT analysis (Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats).

Aims and objectives

There will be an emphasis on building strong and trusting relationships within the group and helping individuals to build on the skills they already have whilst working creatively to find new ways of working for the benefit of the team in which they work.

To build skills in delegation, team building, problem solving, conflict resolution and assertiveness.

To build on existing strengths and to address personal weaknesses.

To build confidence and self-awareness to help create an effective and harmonious workforce.

Fees

£100 covering 6 months.

There will be an opportunity to develop an ongoing network of aspiring leaders and managers when the sessions finish.
